Alright, I and Daru agree that it would be cool if Maul had survived Episode 1 and lived through the episodes as the main anti-hero.
He was a very potent apprentice, and Sidious trained him for decades.
It's known that Maul could withstand a prolonged direct hit from Force lightning and continue fighting without adverse effects to his composure.
Truth to be told, if he had developed, I'm sure he would be wiping the floor with Windu in ROTS.
He starts wiping the floor with Anakin, but then Anakin gets angry and outmaneuvers him.
Another detail that would add immense depth into the story, attainable only if Maul had survived.
In Episode 1 Obi-Wan destroys Maul, or so he thinks. He gets promoted to Jedi Knight and so he can train Anakin now. ( if Maul had APPARENTLY survived, Obi wouldn't get promoted and who's gonna train the boy then ? so Maul has to seemingly die )
In episode 3 Maul reappears. The council is angry with Obi-Wan, because he did not actually kill the Sith Lord, so he does not deserve the mantle of Jedi Master. They remove him from the council, and this is the moment that Palpatine takes notice of it and makes Anakin his representative on the council.
So here we go - Anakin, already renowned as a Republic War Hero and one of the most capable Jedi Knights in the galaxy, finally achieves more power and status than his old master, pushing him further into the void of overconfidence and arrogance.
"I'm not the Jedi I should be. I want more, and I know I shouldn't..."
Obi-Wan remains deeply hurt by the council's attitude for years to come.
This mindset of his contributes to two events in the original trilogy :
When Luke meets him for the first time in New Hope, Obi-Wan says " I'm no real Jedi. I used to be. I'm Ben Kenobi now. " - he has come to question his abilities.
When he reappears in ROTJ to tell Luke the thing he said about the point of view - he remembers how the council had once told him :
" You may have outmaneuvered Darth Maul years ago, but in our point of view you are no real Jedi Knight, let alone Jedi Master. "
and how Anakin shouted during their fight on Mustafar :
" From my point of view the Jedi are evil ! "
These would contribute immensely to the plot.

There is no way that even if Maul had survived, the counsil would be angry at Obi-Wan.
Rather, they would try to think how to bring him down.
Even if Maul HAD survived, Kenobi would just angry and remember his old master. There is no way he would be demoted, the Jedi just dont work like that.
Even if Maul had survived, I think he had already reached his peak, and wouldnt get much stronger. And even if he were to, Obi-Wan could still take him.

Very well said, Republic. I agree completely. Sure, Maul was cool with his tattoos and doublesaber, and killed Liam Neeson, but he wasn't that good. Very skilled duelist, and Ray Park played him well, but Dooku was a more chilling villain.
Or at least was intended to be. Christopher Lee is a top notch actor, but the movies' directors did not utilize him the way they should have to fully make use of his character.

Dooku was a interesting concept because the thing is he was on quote
"The best of all would be the strongest student, yes? Wisest? Most learned in the ways of the Force? Best of all, Dooku would be! Our greatest student! Our greatest failure."
Because he was once one of their teachings, it was kind of a low blow for the jedi order because he once one of them. Many of the Masters knew Dooku. Also along with Yoda, Dooku was one of only two Jedi who were known to have bested Mace Windu at sparring. So a pretty dam good duelist and powerful in the force. The thing is there isn't enough information depict if Maul was as powerful as well.

Dooku wipes the floor with Maul. I mean c'mon, Obi-Wan lousy Apprentice extraordinaire defeated him.

I didn't quite get that last part...
Dooku would have been a great villain, had he been used properly.

I don't know. Maul is the cooler villian but his fighting skills leave something to be desired.

Maul was way more intimidating WITH his black cloak and hood on. without it he was just creepy with all those horns.
