The Galactic Empire
When Supreme Chancellor Palpatine
revealed himself as Darth Sidious to young Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, one of
two things became inevitable. The first was Sidious's destruction and the
restoration of true democracy to the Republic. The second was the seduction of
young Skywalker to the dark side and the formation of an Empire in place of the
Republic ruled by the Sith. It was this second that became true. The Jedi
Masters Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Saesee Tiin, and Agen Kolar moved to confront
Palpatine in his own office after the setting of Coruscant's sun. But the Sith
Lord proved to be a surprisingly powerful enemy, quickly dispatching Kolar and
Tiin, then killing Fisto and
battling Windu in a fierce duel. Windu eventually gained the upper
hand, out of luck more than much else, and cornered Palpatine.
Unfortunately for him, it was in that moment that Anakin Skywalker
burst into the office. Palpatine, weakened and horrifically affected
by his tremendous use of the dark side and that energy's subsequent
deflection by Windu's lightsaber back into his old body, managed to
stir up a conflict within Skywalker by manipulating his love for his
secret wife, Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo and a founding member of
the Delegation of 2,000 that opposed Palpatine in the Senate.
Skywalker struck off Windu's hand and Palpatine, feeding off of
Skywalker's surge of anger, utterly annihilated his foe.
That night, Executive Order 66 was issued. All around the galaxy,
loyal clone troopers turned on their Jedi Generals, and thousands
were extinguished within the space of ten minutes. Anakin Skywalker,
now named Darth Vader and Palpatine's Sith apprentice, led the
attack on the Jedi Temple. The next day, Palpatine publicly
announced the treachery of the Jedi Order and for additional
security, the official reformation of the Republic into the Galactic
Empire. Even when the Jedi Master Yoda confronted Palpatine, the new
Emperor defeated him and forced him into exile. Anakin Skywalker
burned on the lava fields of Mustafar, beaten in a ferocious
lightsaber contest with his former Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Padmé
Amidala, on the run from her husband who now rose on Coruscant as a
black-armored, masked terror, gave birth to twins before dying,
desitute and hopeless as not even the bringing of her children into
the world could reinvigorate her. The remaining Jedi retreated into
hiding. The Jedi enclaves on Kamparas and Rhen Var were wiped out,
and slowly the last vestiges of the Old Republic were swept away.
The Empire had been born.
